Prof. Gybels in memoriam
On Sunday May 29, 2011 passed away one of the founders of ECMT, previous Chairman and member of honour of the ECMT Board. ECMT deeply sympathizes with his family for the loss of Jan Gybels who we remember a dedicated and well respected physician, a dear colleague and good friend.

Jan Gybels is a Belgium native. After obtaining a medical degree at the University of Leuven (K.U.L.) in 1953 he was trained in general surgery in Leuven, in neurosurgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute and in neurology at the National Hospital, Queen Square, London. He is board certified in the three disciplines. In 1962, he obtained a Ph.D. at the University of Leuven. He has served as Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Chief of clinic of Neurosurgery and Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Neurology at the University of Leuven. In 1994, he became Professor Emeritus. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium. His main interests have been focused on functional neurosurgery, and more particular pain, abnormal movements and psychiatric disorders. Important new techniques such as microneurography, supraspinal neurostimulation and the integration of modern computer techniques in stereotactic neurosurgery have been part of his research interests. His long experience of pain surgery has been synthetized in a book titled "Neurosurgical treatment of persistent pain." which he wrote together with William Sweet
