Course Specification

These 2 day tutorials offer stereotactic neurosurgeons the opportunity to expand their knowledge in the application of DBS for the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease and Dystonia. The tutorials combine theoretical learning and hands-on experience.

Target Audience

Neurologists and Neurosurgeons dealing with Parkinson’s Disease and Dystonia patients and interested in the use of DBS for the treatment of these conditions (referrers or implanters).

Topics to be covered

DAY 1

  • Pathophysiology and aetiology of dystonia and dyskinesias
  • Pharmacotherapy in dystonia 
  • DBS in the treatment of dystonia and dyskinesias
  • Patient selection and evaluation
  • Stereotactic surgery with special emphasis on dystonia
  • Techniques to evaluate correct targeting
  • Correct lead positioning to maximize patient therapy benefits
  • Implantation and replacement of neurostimulator

  • Programming and post-analysis
